Should You Try To Clean Your Car Engine At Home?

Is it worth it to try and clean your car engine at home without any help? This is a question many people ask themselves. But the answer depends on how dirty your engine actually is and if you have any experience with cars in general.

This article will provide instructions for those interested in cleaning their engines.

Let Your Engine Cool Down

The first step in cleaning your car engine is to let it cool down. This means that you should not clean the engine while it is still hot from being driven, as this could also lead to severe injuries. The best time to clean the engine is after it has been sitting for a while and has had time to cool down. Waiting until the engine is cool will help keep you safe and make the process more effective.

Remove Any Dirt or Debris that You See on the Engine

The next thing you should do is remove any dirt or debris from the engine. This will keep your engine looking cleaner for longer and ensure that no pieces of dirt fall into it when you are cleaning other areas.

Use a Plastic Bag to Cover Delicate Components on the Engine

Some of the components on your engine may be very fragile, or they might contain wiring that you do not want to get damaged. In either case, it is a good idea to place plastic wrap over these delicate parts before cleaning them. This will keep them safe from accidental spills and ensure that nothing falls into an area where it shouldn’t be.

This is especially important for the battery pack, as you do not want to accidentally spill cleaning fluid on this area and cause a short circuit. Another part that should be protected from accidental contact with cleaning chemicals or water is any wiring harnesses attached to the engine block or other parts of your vehicle’s power system.

Apply Degreaser on the Engine and Scrub it with a Brush

Once you have safely covered all of the sensitive areas, it is time to apply a degreaser to the engine and scrub it with a brush. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies, as this will help loosen up any built-up dirt or grease.

If your car has a lot of build-up, you may need to let the degreaser sit for a few minutes before scrubbing it. This will give the chemicals time to break down the dirt and grime.

Wipe it Dry

Once you have scrubbed the engine clean, use a wipe to rinse off all cleaning fluid and debris. Be sure to get all of the degreasers off the engine, as this can cause corrosion over time.

Finally, use a dry cloth to buff out any remaining moisture and give the engine a clean finish. You should now have a sparkling clean engine.
